The Department of General Studies serves as a foundational academic unit responsible for coordinating and delivering General Studies – Mata Pelajaran Pengajian Umum (MPU) courses. These courses encompass a wide range of knowledge areas such as nationhood, ethics and civilization, critical thinking, integrity, and language proficiency. By adopting an integrated teaching and learning approach, the department aims to nurture well-rounded graduates who are intellectually competent, emotionally resilient, spiritually grounded, and socially responsible in line with the National Education Philosophy.
Historically, these subjects were introduced in the 1980s under the Compulsory Subjects – Mata Pelajaran Wajib (MPW) framework, initially aimed at international students to foster understanding of Malaysian culture, language, and nationhood. In response to national education policy reforms, MPW evolved into the General Studies (MPU) framework in 2013, which now applies to all students regardless of nationality. MPU encompasses components such as nationhood, critical thinking, soft skills, integrity, civic awareness, and universal values.

The General Studies (MPU) curriculum is structured into four key components, each aimed at fostering holistic student development such as intellectually, emotionally, socially, and ethically. These components are mandatory for all students at higher education institutions in Malaysia, both local and international.
